QR Rail & Sail Special

Rail

Travelling Queenslander Class on the Sunlander from Brisbane to Prosperine is a luxurious way to get around. Queenslander Class is considered Queensland Rail’s premium passenger service, so everything is laid on, five star style.

Meals are prepared on-board, using the best local ingredients and the Canecutters Bar is the social hub for the passengers. There’s entertainment in the evening, games and reading material on board, and the personal sleeping cabins are decked out with sink, robes, slippers and toiletries.

Once in Prosperine, there’s a QR-arranged bus transfer to Airlie Beach. To fill in the few hours before Whitsunday Magic sets sail, Buddha and Rachel joined a tour called ‘This is the Airlie’, a half-day look around the sights and views of the area.

Sail

Whitsunday Magic is a three-masted Mediterannean style schooner, built in Turkey in 1994 and completely renovated for its Whitsunday sail adventures. It departs from Abel Marina twice weekly.

It’s 115ft of pure style – all timber and brass and with stacks of space. There are two massive decks. The aft is fully shaded and is a walk-up from the generously sized dining saloon. Then there’s the observation deck, a vast open space with plenty of sunbathing mattresses. The crew encourage adventurous passengers to spend a night on the top deck. Bring up your blanket and pillows and sleep under the stars!

The cabins are all ensuited and air-conditioned with portholes. Double, twin and quads are available.

Itineraries are either based on three or six night cruises, taking in the islands and/or the outer reef.

Rachel and Buddha’s outer reef trip included snorkelling at Bait Reef and Border Island and a visit to Whitsunday Island, taking in the views of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. There was also a full afternoon spent at Whitehaven Beach which is quite literally the jewel in the Whitsundays’ crown.
