Tower Mill Ghosts Tower Mill – Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill
Tower Mill was built in 1828 to grind grain for the Moreton Bay Penal Colony. However, soon after construction it was discovered that there wasn’t enough wind to turn its sails. An alternative source of power was found – human beings.
Convicts worked in gangs to turn giant grindstones. They were whipped if they stopped and some were crushed when they fell from exhaustion.
In the 1940s the Tower Mill served a more horrific purpose, as the colony’s gallows. A plank was erected from the top of the mill and many condemned men were forced to jump to their death.
