Ipswich Cemetery

graveyard

Ipswich cemetery is one of the oldest graveyards in Queensland, and is the final resting-place for many of the area’s pioneers.

Visit the cemetery after dark and you may encounter ghosts from the past, such as Bertie Piper. The boy died of gastroenteritis and his parents erected a life-sized statue on his grave. Unfortunately, vandals destroyed the statue a few years ago, however, locals swear it still appears atop the headstone.

Another inhabitant of the Ipswich Cemetery is James Ryan. He went through life claiming to be Ned Kelly’s brother, Dan. His story could never be disproved, as he knew intimate details about the Kelly Gang. He ultimately came to his end in Ipswich, after being run down by a train. His headless ghost is said to still walk the section of track on which he died.
