Working Dogs
Dogs have assisted humans with hunting for centuries, and one group that continues this tradition is the United Field and Retrieving Club.
They offer training in duck retrieving at their Bald Hills property. In competition, the owner fires a blank shot and a plastic duck is catapulted into the field. The dog is judged on its style, eagerness and retrieving ability. Only gun dog breeds such as retrievers, spaniels and pointers can take part.
Humans have also relied on dogs for their keen sense of smell. Today this skill comes in handy for the sport of tracking. All breeds of dogs can take part and training quickly produces results. An experienced tracking dog can follow the trail left by a human for up to 120 metres and up to 3 hours after it was first laid. Spectators are welcome at the regular tracking trials hosted by the United Field and Retrieving Club.
